Structural Insulated Panels in Residential Construction

Background

A Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) is a building component that is used in walls and floors and even in roofs. As a one-piece, solid structural component, it incorporates framing, insulation and sheathing in a single component. Consisting of two outer layers and an inner core of insulating material, it forms one, solid unit.

When the component pieces of a SIP are pressure-laminated together, the composite material produced is much stronger than the same materials when used separately. A structure built with SIPs, therefore, offers the following advantages:

  • Superior strength;

  • Better insulation;

  • Faster to erect;

  • More environmentally friendly.

A structure built with SIPs does not require a frame or skeleton.
